  • Have sensitive teeth or low pain tolerance
  • Struggle to sit still for long periods
  • Have had traumatic dental experiences in the past

Our Sedation Options

Choose the level of relaxation that’s right for you

😶 Nitrous Oxide

Inhaled through a small mask, nitrous oxide creates a pleasant, relaxed feeling within minutes. You stay awake and responsive throughout.

💊 Oral Conscious Sedation

A prescription pill taken before your appointment produces deep relaxation. Most patients have little memory of the procedure.

How Nitrous Oxide Works

1
Arrive & Settle In

Sit back in the chair and let our team know how you’re feeling. There’s no judgment here.

2
Mask Placed

A small, comfortable nose mask delivers a nitrous oxide-oxygen blend. Breathe normally through your nose.

3
Relaxation Begins

Within 2-3 minutes you’ll feel warm, relaxed, and mildly euphoric. Sounds may feel more distant.

4
Treatment Proceeds

Your dentist works while you stay relaxed. You can respond to questions and give feedback at any time.

5
Quick Recovery

The mask is removed and you breathe pure oxygen for 5 minutes. Effects clear completely – you can drive home.

Oral Conscious Sedation

Before Your Appointment

  • Prescription is called in 1-2 days prior
  • Take pill 1 hour before your appointment
  • Do not eat or drink for 6 hours beforehand
  • Wear comfortable, loose clothing

During Treatment

  • Deeply relaxed – conscious but drowsy
  • Local anesthesia still used for complete comfort
  • Most patients remember little to nothing
  • Vital signs monitored throughout
⚠ Important: You Must Have a Driver

Oral sedation impairs your ability to drive safely for up to 24 hours. A responsible adult must drive you to and from our office and stay with you for the first few hours at home.

Sedation Dentistry FAQ

Answers to the questions we hear most often

Is sedation dentistry safe?
Yes. Both nitrous oxide and oral sedation have decades of safety data when administered by trained dental professionals. We review your full medical history and current medications before recommending any sedation option. Your vital signs are monitored throughout the procedure.
Will I be unconscious during the procedure?
Not with nitrous oxide or oral conscious sedation – both keep you conscious and able to respond to questions. You’ll simply feel deeply relaxed. IV sedation (which we refer out for) creates a deeper, sleep-like state, but even then you can typically be roused.
Can I eat before my sedation appointment?
For nitrous oxide, normal eating is usually fine. For oral conscious sedation, do not eat or drink for 6 hours prior (water is usually okay up to 2 hours before). We’ll give you specific instructions when we schedule your visit.
Does insurance cover sedation dentistry?
Coverage varies by plan. Nitrous oxide is sometimes partially covered; oral sedation may require pre-authorization. We’ll verify your Delta Dental PPO or other insurance benefits in advance and give you a clear estimate of any out-of-pocket costs.
Can children receive sedation?
Yes. Nitrous oxide is safe for children ages 3 and up and is commonly used in pediatric dentistry. Oral sedation for children is determined case-by-case based on age, weight, and medical history. We take extra care to ensure our youngest patients are comfortable and safe.
What if I’ve had bad dental experiences before?
We hear this often and it’s exactly why we offer sedation. Please tell us your history – even just a quick note when you call. Our team won’t dismiss your past experiences, and we won’t rush you. We’ll find the right sedation level and take every visit at your pace.
